LUCY J BLANKSTEIN
LUCY BLANKSTEIN
Subject matter is not as significant as the act of painting. The medium is the message. Various combinations of supports (canvas, watercolor papers of varying surface textures and absorbencies) change the effect of the final image. BLANKSTEIN is known for her fluid brushwork and line in all media.
Blankstein has a long exhibit history in the US and in Europe. Blankstein taught art in South American while living in Bolivia, Ecuador and the Domincan Republic where she established an international art colloquium and card business collective. She has worked in national art museums in DC and exhibited most recently at the Ratner Museum in Bethesda, MD.

VISTAS is an exploration of landscape on paper and canvas, by Lucy Blankstein. Using color as a guide, atmosphere takes center stage. Elements of landscape, natural or architectural minimally located by a significant brush of color create the space. Whether inspired by backyard scenes or travel photos it is the sensation of light suffused air that is the true subject. Trees, a chair, and a closed umbrella in “July” merely serve as points from which to sense one's inner sensibility echoes in the subtle tones as air wends through the space.
The River is inspired by a Chestertown, MD location; greens predominate, and make space for a house. The blue of the river reflects the color of light back to the sky above moving through the spaces between the trees.
Elegant in their use of minimal means, these landscapes embody ambient light and grace. Blankstein, known for her brushwork, says " What interests me most is the play of the medium on the support. I love the tactile meeting of the loaded brush on paper. Emotion always plays a role in the action of creating."
Blankstein's digi based landscapes in The Cabinet are printed on rice paper and have a painterly presence without losing detail from their photographic base, images from travels in France.
The December Cabinet Top Drawer also features exquisite small works for the holiday collector and gifting by Banks, Blankstein, Huff, Kasden, Katzen, Segnan and invited artists.
